You and Your Family

Planning a family photo session can feel overwhelming, but don’t worry—I'm here to make it fun and stress-free! I’ve come up with some simple suggestions that will ensure you have a smooth and enjoyable experience.

1. Talk to Your Kids About the Session

It helps to get your kids excited about the photo session! For younger ones, a simple explanation like “We’re going to have fun with a friend who will take pictures of our family” can work wonders. If you have a shy or nervous child, let me know ahead of time, and we can plan ways to help them feel more comfortable.

2. Choose Comfortable, Simple Clothing
What you wear matters, but comfort is key! I always recommend wearing neutral, plain clothing. Think soft tones, solid colours, and simple styles—nothing too bright or busy. The goal is to keep things relaxed so you’re all focused on each other, not the clothes.
Let your kids have a say in what they wear, too! If they’re comfortable in what they’re wearing, they’ll feel more at ease. And don’t forget a backup outfit for younger children—things happen, and you’ll be glad you planned ahead!

3. Start with a Rested and Fed Family

This might seem obvious, but it’s one of the most important things to remember. Hungry or tired kids aren’t exactly in the mood for fun! If your child is still napping, try to schedule the session around their nap time. It can make a huge difference in their mood. Also, pack a snack and a drink just in case anyone needs a quick pick-me-up during the session. (More for longer sessions than the Mini Shoots, but you get the idea)

4. Bring Something Special to Do if You Want Too
Think about what your family enjoys doing together. If your toddler has a favourite toy, bring it along for comfort and fun (nothing beats their favourite teddy!) These little details will make the session more personal and relaxed.
For older kids, activities like playing catch, racing, or dancing together are great ways to capture natural, happy moments.

5. Embrace Your Child’s Personality
Every child is unique, and that’s part of what makes the photos so special! Whether they’re energetic or more reserved, it’s all good. Let them be themselves, and don’t stress if things don’t go according to plan.
I’ll guide the session, but the key is for you to focus on enjoying your time with your kids. When parents are relaxed, the kids follow suit, and the result is authentic, heartfelt images.

6. Roll with the Unexpected
It’s easy to want everything to go perfectly, but sometimes things just don’t! And that’s totally okay. A child might not want to smile, or the weather might not cooperate, but that’s all part of the beauty of capturing real life.
Don’t stress about it—trust that I’ll capture the beauty of your family, even in the moments that aren’t “picture perfect.”

7. Keep Your Family’s Story in Mind
Why did you decide to book this photo session? Sure, you want beautiful pictures, but more importantly, you want to remember your family’s connection. These photos are about capturing genuine moments that will remind you of how life felt in that time.
So, when things get a little chaotic (because they will!), remember that it’s all part of your family’s story.

8. Connect with Your Family
Take a moment to look at your kids, smile at your spouse, and really enjoy being in the moment. It’s not about perfect poses or everyone looking at the camera at the same time. It’s about showing your connection.
The best images happen when you focus on the people you love, not the camera.

9. Relax, Laugh, and Have Fun
You’ve made it to the session—now it’s time to relax and enjoy the experience! Let me take care of the details while you have fun with your family.
If your little one needs a break to run around, that’s totally fine! I’ll capture some great moments of you and your spouse in the meantime, and before you know it, your child will be ready to jump back in. We’ll play games, share laughs, and I’ll make sure to get those authentic, shots that show your family at their best.

With these tips, I hope you feel more at ease as you prepare for your session! Remember, it’s all about enjoying the moment and making memories together. Let me know if you have any questions or need any extra guidance—I’m here to help! 😊
